What's Your Clutter Ratio?

The Finnish Press recently reported a story about an art student that took an inventory of every object in her 2,500 sq. ft. home. She owned a total of 6,126 items. The most interesting part of the story was her breakdown of how often she used each object:Objects never used - 1,457 or 24%

Objects used less frequently than once a year—2209 or 36%
Objects used once or twice a year– 1411 or 23%
Objects used every month– 587 or 9%
Objects used every week– 401 or 7%

Objects used EVERYDAY– 61 or 1%

Now, take a close look at your home. Start to de-clutter and clear out old, unused items. It will make your home look bigger and cleaner. It will also help raise your Chi' (life force energy) and that's what Feng Shui is all about. Try it, it works!

Choosing Plants For Your Garden - The Feng Shui Way

The days are getting longer and gardeners are sketching out what their piece of heaven will look like this year. Adding new plants, and flowers always gives freshness and vitality to any garden space. There are a few things to consider when planting any new tree, flower, bush or plant according to Feng Shui doctrine.

v     Make sure that the energy level of the plant has an upward Chi’ flow and not a downward one. Most plants grow in an upward direction, this is good, energetic Chi’. But, certain specimens, i.e., a Weeping Willow, have a downward or negative Chi’ flow. This is not auspicious.

v     Be aware of cutting Chi’ energy. Sharp, pointy, spiked specimens epitomize cutting Chi’. They also are harmful to touch. Think of roses with thorns, bougainvillea, holly trees, cactus……..you get the idea…..Ouch!

v     Vines that climb and overtake trees, small bushes and even houses, must be maintained. If they are not cut back, they become Sha, or negative Chi’ energy. Examples of this: Ivy, Wisteria & Climbing Bittersweet.

v     Plant hearty, native specimens in your garden. Unhealthy, weak dying plants or flowers are undesirable Feng Shui. They also are considered Sha energy. Not to mention the fact, that they become an eye sore and you may have to replace the weak plants. This, of course, is not cost efficient. Buy only from reliable sources; this will help to ensure beautiful plant specimens.

Feng Shui and the land are very intertwined. By following a few simple Feng Shui rules, you will ensure that the Chi’ (life force energy) will flow throughout your garden. By surrounding yourself with healthy, beautiful plants your garden will not only be Feng Shui correct, it will be a joy to live with.

In Feng Shui - Water Equals Wealth

In Feng Shui, water equals wealth and wealth can be built up by maintaining all items in your home that represent water. All water elements in your life, indoors and outdoors, represent money in your life. So how do you ensure that money consistently flows into your life? By employing the following useful tips list of money/water tips that will help your checkbook:

  • Keep all water features CLEAN! This means every fountain (indoors & fish tank, birdbath, vase of water that the flowers sit in. Keep your water crystal clear. You do not want to have or attract 'dirty money'.
  • Keep water flowing. Moving water is always preferable. When buying a water feature, it is best to have the water bubble up and flow from the middle downward. That equals money flowing into all areas of your life.
  • If your water feature flows down one side only, position it so that the water is flowing into your home, not flowing towards a door. That equals money leaving your life.
  • Swimming pools and hot tubs also count, so keep these clean and in excellent working condition.
  • If you cannot imagine having a live water feature in your life, than get a picture, painting or sculpture of water. A beautiful beach scene with soft waves, a gentle river, a calming waterfall will all work. Once again make sure the direction of the water flows into your home.
  • Please avoid raging rivers, high rolling seas and overpowering waterfall pictures. This represents money that flows quickly in and then out of your life.

Have fun and prosper with the wonderful Feng Shui relationship between money and water. Remember to surround yourself with any water feature that you really love and then watch your money GROW!

Selecting Art The Feng Shui Way

Feng Shui is the 4,000 year old Chinese art of placement and balance that is employed in your home and work space. Feng Shui also teaches us to place items in our environment that we honor and love. Every object that you place in your environment needs to be a clear, conscious decision to uplift your energy (Chi) and support your well-being.

An important consideration in Feng Shui is the artwork that you place on your walls. Art is a very important component of your environment. It is defined as any picture, poster, tapestry, figurine, water feature  or sculpture that is placed in your home or office space. Artwork sets the tone of the space and reflects who you are and what you love and value in your life. Time, thought and consideration needs to be given to every piece of art that you welcome into your life.

The following are several Feng Shui tips on what art may be the most effective and inspiring for whatever area in your life that you are currently woking on and giving your attention to:

  • LOVE- If you are single and want to call in your forever soul mate, DO NOT surround yourself with artwork of single people. Most commonly, single women have pictures of single women and visa versa. INSTEAD, put up pictures of romantic, happy couples. You can also place 'pairs' of animals, i.i. dolphins or lovebirds in your bedroom. This will help you set the tone and intent of bring in a life partner or new boyfriend or girlfriend.
  • WEALTH- If more income is what you want to work on, buy artwork that represents a waelthy lifestyle to you. For example, if you love sailing, put up a picture of the ultimate sailboat or speed boat that you would like to own. Any type of water (lake, ocean, waterfall) is a great picture to display. In Feng Shui, water means wealth. Make sure the picture is inviting and serene. A raging waterfall or turbulent ocean is that last thing you want to place on your walls. Also, make aur the waterfall flows into your home and not towards a dorr. That would symbolize money flowing away from your life.
  • HEALTH- The Chinese feels that health is everything in life and I couldn't agree more. So, it is important to keep your mind, body and spirit in the best condition possible. In Feng Shui, it is encouraged to honor the entire body as a whole. Therefore, statues, paintings or posters that depict body parts seperatly ( head, hand, torso) are discouraged. It is optimal to have the entire body in the picture, not just a segment. Also, make sure the people in your artwork look vibrant and healthy. Sleeping people and deathlike, pale bodies and faces only deplete the Chi' (life force energy) in your life. Surrounding yourself with strong, happy, healthy people is best for your health and well-being.

In Feng Shui, every piece of art we bring into our lives will effect how we feel about ourselves. We want to enliven and uplift our Chi in order to be a happy, healthy, whole person. Be sure to surround yourself with optimistic imagery in your artwork. Most importantly, always live with what you love. This will keep your Chi vibrating at a high, pure level.

Staying In Hotels- Feng Shui Tips

Traveling and visiting new parts of the world is something that most of my clients love to do. Yet, having a restful stay and sleep in a hotel is not always that easy to accomplish. Try the following Feng Shui tips to assist you in feeling at home and comfortable in your new hotel environment.

1. Scent- First, open the window (if you can) and lightly spray the hotel room with a favorite scent that you brought from home. You can also now buy ‘sage’ in a spray form. You may want to try this. Another option is to buy a scented candle. They now come in travel tins and are very convenient. Making the room feel (and smell) like it is ‘yours’ is very important.

2.  Mirrors– If a mirror is directly facing the bed, cover it with a towel or extra sheet. Mirrors have lots of energy and will interrupt your sleep.

3. Clothing– UNPACK YOUR SUITCASE IF YOU ARE IN THE HOTEL FOR MORE THAN 2 NIGHTS! Living out of a suitcase gives us a very rushed, ungrounded feeling. The first thing I do when I enter a hotel room is to unpack and ‘claim the space’.

4. The Little Extras– Bring, or buy, anything that really makes you feel relaxed and ‘at home’. One client, always has fresh flowers in her home. When traveling, she buys one pretty flower and places it in a the hotel room water glass. I bring my own pillow to ensure a good night’s sleep. You could also pack a picture of your husband/wife, children or even the family dog!

Rest, relax and enjoy your travels, the Feng Shui Way!

How To Sell Your House Fast The Feng Shui Way

Feng Shui is the sacred Chinese art of placement that is over 4,000 years old. It derives it's roots from the land. When done correctly, it empowers the homeowner (seller) to achieve peace and prosperity. Let me repeat, PROSPERITY.

To achieve prosperity in a sale, a seller not only has to Feng Shui the interior of the house, but also the land/yard that you own. Please realize that by the time the prospective buyer opens your front door and walks in, they have already made the decision if they are going to buy your home. Here are a few ways you can Feng Shui your property in preparation for a sale:

*House must have curb appeal. Objectively walk to the street and note all distractions that stand in the way of someone seeing and appreciating your home. Are the trees or bushes blocking windows or doors? Does the house lack a safe, well lit walkway to the front door? Or, is there a lack of any landscaping? Does the house look lonely and barren? Sprucing up the front yard helps generate more positive Chi' (life force energy) that is needed for buyer to get excited about your house.

*The Front Door Should Be a Welcome Portal To The Inside Of Your Home. Your front door should sparkle! Fresh coat of paint and polished or new door handle and lock. The doorbell should work and a new, clean welcome mat be placed outside. The door should open with ease and NOTHING should be on either side to block it. Place colorful planters or seasonal items, i.e. pumpkins to further call in the Chi'.

*De-Clutter The Inside Of The House AND Also The Outside Yard. It amazes me what people leave hanging around the outside of their homes. The cleaner your home and property is, the easier a prospective buyer will be able to envision themselves living there. If you have to, store any items that you do not really need.

Being mindful of your home's exterior and garden will help you set apart your property from the rest of the homes for sale. If you need any assistance or have any questions, please feel free to email me at: ellie@fengshuipower.com

How To Clear Clutter In A Closet

The first obsticle that any person has to deal with before they are able to implement any Feng Shui cures is CLUTTER!

This is an ugly monster that energetically grows roots to where ever the clutter has accumulated. Once there, it seems to grow larger & larger every day. No wonder people call me and scream: HELP!

Recently, I was hired by a gentlmen to de-clutter his office space.  The first thing I attacked was the closets. I want to share with you a winning formula on "how to" effectively attack closet clutter:

Dscn0655_4

1.  Before - First- empty everything out of the closet. Sort through & throw out all the things you have not used within the last 6 months.

Dscn0656

2. During-Then, neatly position items on each shelf. You are figuring out exactly what items work the best in certain location. Please put supplies that you do not use that often on the very top & bottom shelves. The middle shelves should be saved for supplies you use the most.

Dscn0660

3. Finished Project -Figure out exactly what type of closet storage you will need for the final step. Make sure the drawers slide out easily & are securily. Label each drawer. Put in all supplies on that self & you are ready to roll!

Have fun with this project and if you can not tackle it in one day, then due each part (1-3), each day. Your closets will sing with joy!

Feng Shui: to Enliven and Balance Your Garden, and Your Inner Self

Spring is the time of year when we happily leave our home and venture outside to our garden to reconnect with our land, nature, and all the beauty it has to offer. Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement, is practiced, not only in your home, but also in your yard and garden. As a matter of fact, in Feng Shui, it is impossible to separate our home from the land that it occupies. The home represents the ‘inner’self, while the garden is your more ‘public, visible’ space.  Therefore, it is very important to have a balanced and harmonious garden, which influences the health, success and happiness in our lives.

In Feng Shui, Chi is the universe’s life energy force. To be the most effective, Chi must be able to flow smoothly throughout all aspects of your life: Workplace, home, and garden.  It is the energy force that is within all living and nonliving things on this planet. Every leaf, flower, rock, waterfall, animal, etc. has an element of Chi within. In Feng Shui, it is imperative to provide maximum opportunity for Chi to flow smoothly throughout our indoor and outdoor space. By implementing the following Feng Shui cures, you can enliven and enhance a beautiful part of your life that will give you joy, love, and happiness.

First things first. Clean up and clear out all the CLUTTER on your property and in your garden. It’s time for a good spring-cleaning for your yard. Besides, the basic garden clean up, you must remove all trash, and throw away all broken, rusty, old and unusable items. Get rid of dead trees, plants and shrubs. Anything that does not work properly, in Feng Shui, is considered negative energy (Sha). So, if you have anything that is broken, get rid of it. This includes: broken cars, trucks, children toys, etc. All unusable, unsafe playground equipment should also be removed. You get the picture. If any item in your yard does not add value, than it is time to part with it. Clutter is a serious problem that causes Chi to get stuck, so let’s clear it up and start to enhance your garden.

A Chi enhancer is anything that will help raise the vibration or energy in any area of your garden. A Chi enhancer assists energy to move smoothly, and uninterrupted in the area you place it. Chi tends to stagnate in any corner, dark, shady area, or low-lying piece of land. There are basically nine (9) Chi enhancers you can use to help move energy. Below, is the list of Chi enhancers to enjoy in your garden:

1.      Sound- Placement of wind chimes or bells.

2.      Light- Adding lighting or a spotlight to any area of the garden or

     pathway.

3.      Reflective- A Victorian gazing ball placed on a stand will reflect back parts of the garden you most admire and increase the ‘wealth’ and beauty of that area. If placed near the entrance of your garden, it will deflect any negative energy that may try to enter.

4.      Smell- Fragrant flowers and herbs help to stimulate the senses. Depending on what you choose to plant, you will set the mood for that area. It can be a calming fragrance like Lavender, or a more invigorating scent like Lemon Geranium.

5.      Water- fresh, moving, clean water is best to use. Chi is always attracted to water. Adding an outdoor, tabletop fountain will add vibrant energy. Birdbaths not only represent water, they also attract wildlife. Remember, the water must be keep clean.

6.      Color- this can easily be accomplished through any type of flower, greenery or shrubbery you choose. Don’t forget the color element in outdoor furniture, sheds, fences, doghouses, pathways, etc.  A clean, fresh coat of any color paint will help brighten up the area. Choose a color that makes your heart sing and uplifts your spirit.

7.      Stillness -Statues and large rocks help ground any area of your property where the Chi is moving too fast. Overly active Chi, such as a windy part of your garden, can be quieted down by placing a large, still object.

8.      Movement- Windsocks, flags, mobiles all physically move Chi. They add color and boldness in any area.

9.      Life- attracting wildlife to your garden or property can be a delight. You can add some colorful fish to an outdoor pond, or hang a decorative, yet functional birdfeeder and watch the show. Chi becomes stuck, and stagnant in corners of a garden. By inviting wildlife into your garden, you instantly raise the Chi in that area, and do something beneficial for the wild animals.

You now have a basic knowledge of how to balance and enliven your garden. By recognizing those stagnant corners, and utilizing Feng Shui cures, you are allowing Chi to flow evenly throughout your outdoor space. Use the enhancers you resonate most with. Your garden will then be transformed into a beautiful, peaceful, outdoor sanctuary. By balancing your garden’s energy, you are also balancing your inner self, and a new sense of calm and happiness will become more apparent. Let the Chi Flow!

How To Clean A Crystal

Faceted crystal spheres are a common Feng Shui cure to enhance or disperse chi. Make sure your crystal is at least 40mm and is "leaded". A leaded crystal has 30% lead oxide that has been added to pure glass. The crystals that I sell to clients are, but many spheres in New Age shops are not. Be sure to ask when purchasing one.

Clean your crystals every 3 months to ensure they are working at peak performance. Your crystals will become clogged and sticky depending on its role and position in the home.

How To Clean A Crystal:

1. Place 1 tablespoon of sea salt into a cup of lukewarm distilled or bottled water.

2. Submerge the crystal in the water & let sit for at least 1 hr.

3. Put the crystal OUTSIDE for at least 24 hours. Never place outside during a full moon. Note: The sun rays will still infuse the crystal with life energy even on cloudy, snowy or rainy days.

Now your crystal is charged and ready!
